Autism Society of America Launches New Online Course on Autism and Environmental Health
The Autism Society of America is pleased to announce the release of its newest online course, “Autism and the Environment 101.” Sponsored by the John Merck Fund, this introductory-level course was designed to give individuals with autism spectrum disorders, parents, other family members, physicians, educators or anyone affected by autism a general overview of the links between environmental toxins and autism. Brain Waves Show Sound Processing Abnormalities in Children with Autism

Thousands Gather at Gaylord Palms for 39th Annual Conference to Teach and Learn about Autism Spectrum Disorders
More than 2,000 parents, professionals, individuals on the spectrum, and others affected by autism joined the Autism Society of America last week in Orlando, Fla. for the 39th Annual Conference and Exposition on Autism Spectrum Disorders. “One of the key things we’ll see from this conference is that we actually know everything we need to know about treating autism. Senators Work to Get Help for Military Families Affected by Autism
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have agreed to lead an effort to improve coverage for autism services under the TRICARE program, which is the U.S. military health program. They have drafted an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act which would increase the current cost-share program limit for dependant children of military personnel who have been diagnosed with autism from $2,500 to $5,000. This amendment mirrors a similar effort in the House of Representatives in May. Read more …
Study Finds New Genes Related to Autism
A new study published in the journal Science has identified at least six new genes related to autism. "We're showing, on the one hand, that autism seems to have a large genetic component," study co-author Christopher Walsh, chief of genetics at Children's Hospital Boston, told Scientific American. "But, the genes that are involved are actually those that are involved in responding to the environment and learning." He added that this highlights the importance of early intervention, especially in terms of behavioral therapy. Read more …

New Story of Autism in the Family
Knowing Joseph is the story of two boys, Brian and his brother, Joseph, a six year old with autism. Brian is embarrassed by Joseph’s public meltdowns. He screams when normal sounds are too loud for him, and doesn’t play well with other kids. Brian constantly finds himself defending Joseph from the school bullies. The Financial Security Accounts for Individuals with Disabilities Act, if passed, would allow families to create a tax-deferred savings plan for their loved one with a disability. Ohio HB170, Autism Insurance Parity, is currently being considered by the Ohio General Assembly House Insurance Committee. ASO is now working to secure support from other organizations in Ohio and nationally that represent children, including those with developmental disabilities such as autism, and asembling a team of advocates to help with the cause. Insurance Parity Bill Introduced in Virginia House of Delegates
On January 15, HB83, which would grant health insurance parity to individuals with autism spectrum disorders, was introduced to the Commerce Committee in the Virginia House of Delegates. Researchers Investigate Causes of Autism
The number of autism diagnoses continued to grow even after the mercury-containing preservative thimerosal was removed from childhood vaccines, researchers from the California Department of Public Health found in a study published in the January 2008 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. On the other side of the country, a group of researchers from the Autism Consortium in Boston uncovered a genetic flaw that may account for 1 percent of autism cases. Read more …
Researchers Seek Participants in Vitamin/Mineral Supplement Study
The Autism/Asperger’s Research Program at Arizona State University is conducting a study on the effectiveness of a new vitamin/mineral supplement in reducing the symptoms of autism. The 12-week treatment study includes only behavioral assessments, no blood tests. Read more …
